Ubuntu 10.04 Firewall

Mark asks…

What’s a good firewall for Ubuntu?

I installed Firestarter, however it doesn’t start in the system tray area when I reboot.
Just curious, but what is a good (easy to install/use) firewall for Ubuntu 10.04?

admin answers:

Firestarter is manually switch ON-OFF depending on user.
If you feel unsafe, turn it on, or off if not,
on upper panel click,
applications>internet>firestarter>

to get it from repository,
applications>ubuntu software center>internet
then search for “firestarter”
click download.

This is an option, but you are still safe even without installing it.

Donald asks…

Ubuntu 10.04 security question?

Ok, so i recently got ubuntu 10.04. I know linux systems are super secure, so you don’t really have to worry about viruses or malware. However, i decided to download avast linux home addition anyway (and of course a firestarter firewall.) because it is free. But my question is, even though linux isn’t vulnerable against viruses, trojans, mallware ext.. what about adware and spyware? So does linux get adware and spyware, and if so does avast free get rid of it? Thanks guys.

admin answers:

It is highly unlikely you would have any issues. I have had no problems in the 4years I have been working with Linux. However to put your mind at rest you can install ClamAV

Here is the Official Ubuntu ClamAV Documentation

by the way I don’t no if this should be related but at the begging the firewall popped asking me to block or unblock something related to the Ubuntu or to ask me later so i clicked on ask me later !

i wish you can help me

admin answers:

To fix the error you just need to directly download the Ubuntu iso and put the file in the directory where your Wubi is located. Now relaunch Wubi and everything will work fine.

Daniel asks…

Can a hacker break into my computer via the web browser?

I have some reason to believe that some people may want to damage my computer. I am using ubuntu 10.04. My web browsers are opera and google chrome. I used the computer as a user with limited privileges. My questions are:
1) Can a hacker steal the administrator password via the web browser and then logon to my machine to make changes?
If yes, how can I prevent that? I am thinking of finding a way to make the machine a one user system, meaning that only one user can logon at a time. Is that possible?
For now I have disabled remote logon. But those hackers are so resourceful sometimes.
Note: I have a router which is configured to not allow anybody pass the firewall.

admin answers:

Hi.A hacker can break into a computer through a keylogger or a phishing web site. With a keylogger a hacker can see all the information that you are typing and getting files off your computer. With a phishing site, a hacker just sends you a link that you think is the real we site & it’s not. It asks you to enter in personal info. You enter info & it goes to hacker.
