Definitely not, if you are a “professional”.
The reason are simple:
- a template is instantaneously recognisable as the product of an amateur.
- many templates actually do not work properly.
- 99% of templates do not cater for full AJAX sites.
- many templates have been designed for one resolution only, or for one browser only.
- many templates rely on other servers for images or scripts: a very, very bad idea, as the site relies on an external source on which you have no control…

However:
Withing the myriads of templates available, some of them are quite pretty, so using them to start with may be a small shortcut, on the graphic side, but editing them to adapt them to your needs, usually, takes longer to do than starting from scratch!
Personally, I prefer to work with Graphic Designers. They “design” the pages, as it should “look”, and supply me with a full layers photoshop file. I cut the images in pieces and make the site work! I then have the “look” AND the “functionality”.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route…

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a “name party” & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I’m not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You’ll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for “free domain name search” and “national yellowpages” and the appropriate links will pop up.

Well, If you feel that this is a negative comment then I cannot help it. But to start a company and to write business model you need to be more accurate in what you do. Firstly, I see many spell mistakes in your post. You cannot say excuses in such things. Regarding web design, well if you have contacts (freelance web designers) you can always get in to contracts rather than leaving them and loosing money..

This is a tall order mate, seeing the sample website www.reed.co.uk it’s a site with data base and that costs a lot of money… Probably around US$3k min. But if you just need the design that would be cheaper, may less than 500 for the lay out…

You can either hire freelancers which is cheaper or go to a more stable web development company more expensive but it’s a one stop shop.

If these are genuine mistakes then they should not charge to rectify them. If these are changes you’ve made during the course of the project then yes you should pay for them.

If this has taken three years to build there are two options.

1) the company is incompetent
2) you – as the client – have not provided the content or structure required, or have moved the goalposts so many time and in so many ways that many revisions to the original brief have been needed.

If 2 is the case then the fact is that the company has probably lost a considerable sum in working with you and they need to cover that loss.
