Recently I’ve changed from Ubuntu running Gnome 3 front end to Ubuntu running the KDE front end or Kubuntu. the main reason for this change are problems with the Ati graphics drivers .

One of the things that I love is Dropbox . Dropbox is a cloud based backup service that is accessible on almost all connected devices. It works great on Ubuntu with a Gnome front end as it is tightly tied into the Nautilus file manager. When you install the deb package on KDE it says it installs fine but nothing happens. I have found a very simple way to get this working.

Open your file manager (dolphin)

Click on Root

Navigate to usr\share\applications

Find the file dropbox.desktop

Click , this will let you download the dropbox daemon and set up the program

Job done simple!

i cant afford illustrator so im using inkscape which is pretty amazing but the bezier tool doesnt work as well as the pen tool in illustrator, or so i think so far. usually its super easy for me to trace something in illustrator and then make a clipping path so i have just an image and not a background. graphic designers know what im talking about. how do i do the same in inkscape? i know how to do it but what my prob is is that i make a curve and it extends too far. in illustrator i can make a curve then click on the end and start a brand new section of that line. in inkscape theres nothing to click and it extends on its own and its all outta whack. anyone?!

I switched to Linux from Windows approximately 3 years ago and I must say I am so glad I did. Most of my contemporaries are ether Mac or Windows based web designers using the Adobe suite of tools.

Designing websites on Linux, at the base level can be achieved with a basic text and graphics editors (as it can on most other operating systems). But there is so much more to Linux then just simple tools. I have created this list of web design tools that I use on a day to day basis, some are cross platform, some are online and all are free. The aim of any tool-kit is to help you to complete a task in the least time with the best results.

Website Layout Tools

My method of working starts with working out the basic layout of a web page. I do this by placing basic blocks into position within either a wire framing program such as pencil or directly into a vector graphics program.

The popular and fairly powerful Pencil Project is a free and open source Firefox add-on tool and a standalone program for making diagrams and wire framing. Pencil allows you to build your site by placing the basic building blocks into position. By doing this wire framing you can work out the dimensions before you code. With Pencil you can edit text and work on the navigation by linking pages within the software.

The other program that I use for wire framing is Inkscape, a deceptively powerful vector graphics tool and the de facto vector program on Linux.

For more options on Wire framing tools follow the link below

The Ten Best FREE Wirefame/Mockup/Prototype applications for designers and developers.

Graphics

Most websites require some form of graphics to complement the layout, Most designers when given a choice will opt for Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop Alternatives

Adobe Photoshop is a given in any designer’s wish list, and it comes with a host of features that allow for excellent and professional photo editing. The biggest obstacle to any designer who wants Photoshop is the price, which can be prohibitive. Fortunately there are a number of open source (and completely free) programs out there that do much of what Photoshop can, and sometimes more.

In this collection, you will find 10 excellent examples of open source and free alternatives to Adobe Photoshop.

My tools of choice

Again we fall back to Inkscape an excellent program (also available on Windows and Mac) And Gimp, Gimp shares many features of Photoshop.

Gimp Overview

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

http://www.gimp.org/about/introduction.html

Putting it all Together into HTML

To edit HTML- and CSS-code you only need a simple plaintext-editor — the rest depends on your skills and your creativity. However, to make your life a little bit easier, you can use some more comfortable source-code editors with advanced editing features.

35 Useful Source Code Editors Reviewed

My tools of choice are:

BlueFish

Bluefish has many features, this list will give you an overview of the most important or outstanding features in Bluefish 2.0. Not all features are available in Bluefish 1.0, and not all features are (yet) available on windows.

Aptana Studio

Aptana Studio is the industry leading web development environment that combines powerful authoring tools for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with thousands of additional plugins created by the community

Kompozer

KompoZer is based on Gecko, the layout engine inside Mozilla; it’s a super-fast, very reliable, standards conformant engine maintained on a daily basis by a wide community of developers. Its remarkable support of XML, CSS and JavaScript offers the best authoring platform on the market. Its architecture based on XUL makes it the most extensible editing tool ever. I find that the way it deals with CSS speeds up development no end I love the way Komozer allows you to see the effect of changing the style before you commit.

Testing

One overlooked aspect of design is testing on different web browser if your on linux this is difficult especially with regard to Internet Explore. For this I use netrenderer this will provide me with a screenshot rendered on internet explore of choice. Another option if you’re on Linux is Ies4Linux this will allow you to install IE 5.5, 6, and 7 onto your system using Wine (Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows.)

From time to time you need to edit images on mass. This may be as simple as converting from one image format to another or as complecated as performing many different actions on multiple files. If you are looking to a Linux Image Converter take a look at Phatch

Phatch allows you to use EXIF and IPTC tags for renaming and data stamping. Phatch also supports a console version to batch photos on webservers.

When you think about getting a website a lot of people under estimate the planning involved in creating a good website. As the old saying goes “fail to plan – plan to fail” and never is this more true , then with web design.

Building a website is not just about putting something on-line , its about thinking your way through the process. Knowing that it will work and knowing what you want it to do.

I have put together a few pointers to get you started with what you need to do before you actually get anything onto the net.
The websites goal

You need to know, what you want your site to do, i.e. is it selling a tangible product , an Idea , service, capturing names for a mailing list to name a few. Without knowing this your designer will be aiming without a target , defining your goal will make it easier to design something that will meet your needs.

Your target market
Who are you selling to and how are you planning on reaching them. Marketing options for a website are Search Engine Optimisation, Pay Per Click Marketing, Social Media and of course traditional advertising. Knowing your demographic will help the web designer to design appropriately, if your selling to teenagers you need a design that ties in with there values.

Research
Before we do any project we query the search engines for how many searches a day are taking place for that service or product. If nobody’s looking, then the project would be a waste of money. We don’t take on projects that do not stand a good chance of making a return, nor should you. If you find there is no searches for your product, move on to a new venture because you will not make any money

E-commerce
With regard to an e-commerce site take a generic core term related to your industry to find out the size of the market.

Colour schemes
Do you have a particular corporate identity that you would like to stay with, or is this a totally self contained site giving more freedom to the look.

Copy
With regard to written text for the site you would need to provide your designer with the text in electronic form, it would be preferable in rich text format , or you can source a professional copywriter.

Next stage
After you have ascertained that there is a market for your product or service contact your web designer who would then produce a mock-up of the design. and send it to you via email for your approval, once you have a design that everyone is happy with, you can then move on to getting the website built and implemented

As I design on open source software and one of my favorites is Inkscape but by default it operates at 90 dpi and not 72 dpi like the web. I was having real problems exporting my web design mock ups at the correct sizes. I worked out a simple solution to this by dividing 90 by 72 giving 1.25.

the significance is that to export at 72 dpi with the correct proportions simply scale your design by 125 %
