Inkscape vs GIMP for CafePress?

I want to make money on CafePress. I’m not an adult so I know its not good pay, but I am just looking for some cash. I have an account, setup a new email, and created a new website to promote my shirts already, but I need to get a FREE design software. I did some research and found GIMP and Inkscape. Which is better, QUALITY wise. I don’t care if GIMP can do layers or bends or whatever.
What file formats do you accept for images?

CafePress.com supports several picture file formats. Each has different trade offs between file size and quality. Whichever format you decide on using, please remember to save all image files in RGB color mode.
“PNG- 4 MB” JPG – 7 MB / , PSD TIFF BMP EPS (AI vector not allowed)

they prefer Png file formats, Inkscape only exports as png from design, it saves as svg or other vector file formats, but you want to export design to png file, and high quality 300 ppi/dpi or best quality for file sizes,
Inkscape illustrator

http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php?lang=en

because it os vector, you can export png,
and then re-edit png in Gimp if needed,

Gimp ~image editor, has options for saving as JPG PSD TIFF BMP , EPS may require ghost script conversion plugin via ps to eps/pdf,

GRAPHIC DESIGNERS: using INKSCAPE instead of ILLUSTRATOR to trace image and create clipping path?

i cant afford illustrator so im using inkscape which is pretty amazing but the bezier tool doesnt work as well as the pen tool in illustrator, or so i think so far. usually its super easy for me to trace something in illustrator and then make a clipping path so i have just an image and not a background. graphic designers know what im talking about. how do i do the same in inkscape? i know how to do it but what my prob is is that i make a curve and it extends too far. in illustrator i can make a curve then click on the end and start a brand new section of that line. in inkscape theres nothing to click and it extends on its own and its all outta whack. anyone?!
Is there a particular reason you need a SVG editor for this? It seems like Gimp would work better if you just want to crop and resize.

However, there’s a forum posting at http://forums.fanart-central.net/viewtopic.php?t=12984 with information on resizing images in a variety of applications, including Inkscape. Scroll down to the bottom.

admin answers:

Well it depends on what you want to accomplish as to what is better…

Inkscape is a graphical editor for Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) files. It’s freely available as Open Source, and is known as a stable, powerful, and highly usable vector drawing application.

Gimpshop is a Gimp modification that features menu layouts, dialogs and naming conventions similar to those found in Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe Illustrator software gives you new creative freedom that lets you realize your ideas quickly and powerfully. Instantly convert bitmaps to vector artwork and paint more intuitively.

There are different flavors of some of these programs, but since I do not know what your goals are, I am listing an example of all three that I have used for three very different projects.

I like them all and have not found fault with any of them

I really don’t know what to tell you, maybe get a job at a print shop if you want to cut corners. I am in one of the best Canadian privitized arts Universities, NSCAD. It was like jumping through hoops to get in, but I worked at a photo shop for a few years with a digital department. I would guess my portfolio is easily a grand retail cost anyway.

Not to discourage you but the percentage that gets into my school is maybe 3% of all applicants. From what I know they won’t even consider you. It may be detremental to your scholastic career to make assumptions like you don’t need a portfolio. Yes you can apply the next year again, but they won’t forget your name. I would wait a year and build up a solid portfolio if it was me.

Simon Jones answers:

I’m a freelance graphic designer in San Francisco.

My daily routine involves waking up, turning on the computer around 9am and working with very few breaks up until I go to sleep at 2am (if I’m lucky). Usually my email inbox will have messages from clients about the projects we have going on. I’ll usually have something like 5 or 6 different projects all happening at the same time. It’s up to me to make sure I keep all my projects on-track, which is sometimes very challenging (i.e. Stressful). Every day is a matter of figuring out which project needs my attention most urgently in order to hit all the deadlines. Every client has a project manager, and he or she will communicate with me throughout the day via email and on the phone. They might have some new information for me or need to check on my schedule for a meeting (and if somehow I’ve become late with a deadline they’ll be calling me to figure out our emergency plans!)

My clients are a very diverse group: advertising agencies, branding companies, corporate training providers, product design firms, skateboard companies, book publishers, etc. They call on me for an equally wide variety of skills: art direction, creative strategy, production management, print design, interface design, traditional illustration, Flash animation, information design, presentation design, photography, logo design, packaging design. When you freelance, you never know what skills you’ll need. If you’re smart, you’ll keep learning new things all the time. If you keep at it long enough, eventually you turn all your hobbies into work (hooray! More work!)

I also spend a lot of time on each project doing things that don’t seem creative at all: estimates, timesheets, invoicing, bookkeeping, dealing with taxes, licenses, royalties, etc.

I’m very fortunate to be so busy and with such good clients. But it’s the kind of luck that comes only after you spend 14 years working your butt off, constantly learning new software, new techniques, picking up old techniques from folks who have been doing this longer than you have, etc.

Let’s see, in an average week I’ll spend about 90% of my time at my desk, with iTunes music keeping me company out of my old speakers, and with my brain buried inside of creative tasks using software like Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash, Acrobat Pro, PowerPoint, QuickTIme Pro, iPhoto, Google SketchUp — switching back and forth from OS X to WIndows XP to test files in various browsers and platforms. The other 10% of an average week is spent running around to meetings with clients, or with prospective clients — talking about new projects, current projects, discussing creative plans, trying to convince them to pay me quicker, etc.

Most of these meetings take place in San Francisco, and I’ll usually take a cab (and forget to get a receipt). But frequently the meetings are down in the Silicon Valley somewhere, so I need to keep my car registered and running.

Meetings definitely get in the way of getting work done, but they’re a part of life when you run a freelance business. You need a constant flow of new work to keep you busy, or else you’ll have no money. And it runs out real quick living in San Francisco.

Far too often I end up having to pull all-nighters to hit deadlines. I’m well acquainted with Boobah keeping me company on TV at 4:30 am and then continuing to work nonstop until after another sunset. It’s not fun. There is frequent swearing. But this is the price of freelance freedom. Mainly it’s because all of my clients like to imagine they are my only client, and I’ll sometimes get overlapping deadlines even though I try my best to avoid it.

Well there you have it. That’s my wonderful life as a freelance graphic designer.

graphic design?

How do you see graphic design for business purposes? In the eagerness of selling, is it possible to say that the end justifies the means?

admin answers:

I see graphic design as a very important part to ensure that business run smoothly and people can identify things easyer. If you have a image on a box in a factory, it will take less time for the employee to identify what might be in the box. Kinda like you see arrows pointing “this way up.”

If your talking about how a logo or label is used to influence sales of a product, I would say that graphics definitely get justified in the end. That is if it is a well thought out logo and design, one that represents your company as well as your products.

Pictures and Images can be understood by anyone, Visual graphic/arts is a universal language. “A picture can say a million words,” in the end you would likely save money on advertising, if pictures are used instead of words.

You dont need to know computer programming to be a graphic designer…

It depends what you want to go into print or web?

I work in both, but if you are working with Illustrator / Photoshop I wouldnt bother with Quark, stick with InDesign. Web, Dreamweaver, Flash, you dont really need to know Fireworks if your good in Photoshop. Try to be an all rounder.

You dont need a degree, I never went but you do need a lot of raw talent, I work for a high end studio and I know a lot of designers who never went to Uni (I do know one but he designs ebay shops for a living, not really rock and roll).

Learn your Pantone colours, thats really important.

Start building your portfolio, do it for free if you have to, I used to design gig posters for bands (long time ago now) but it sort of gives you a sense of working with customers.

Wow! You’ve asked a tough one! That’s like asking “How high is Up?”

As a graphic Designer, I have worked many different jobs. I have airbrushed, designed layouts for newsletters, magazines, greeting cards, and so on. I have done so many things that I can’t even rememer! And the funny thing is, I studied scientific illustration, not design! Right now, I do 2-D cad which gets translated to G-codes to run variouse milling machines. It’s a lot of fun, =-)

Here’s an article that may help answer some of your questions,
http://www.designtalkboard.com/design-articles/job-descriptions.php

I recommend checking out all the job boards, see what’s out there.

Most Graphic Designers I know are only making about 22-30k . its a job you do for love

Good Luck!

There is a lot of buzz at the moment about the speed of your website being a factor that affects your search engine rankings. Matt Cutts the unofficial public face of Google seems to be dropping little hints to this fact whenever he speaks, most recently when he addressed the Dublin chamber of commerce you can read more about Matt’s visit in the Irish Times

You know you need to speed up your site but how do you do it

Now that you know the benefits of having a higher page loading speed, how do you actually go about it? Well, most SEO experts will usually proceed by performing the following SEO methodologies considered to be the best in order to achieve higher web page speed:

Reduce initial display time of webpage

Resize and optimize images

Upgrade CSS style sheets to the latest standards

Optimize Java scripts

Optimize multimedia content

What did you just say?

All this sounds great but if your a small business owner with limited experience with the web its a tall order in anyone’s book. what you need is a step by step guide on how to do all the above tasks.

Reduce initial display time of webpage

Well yes, that’s what were trying to do! ignore this one as it’s the out come of the methods we are going to put in place.

Resize and optimize images

One we can work with. Often images on a web page are unoptimised. What this means is they are larger in file size then they need to be (larger the file the longer it takes to download) this can be because the image is using more detail then it needs, or the actual image dimensions are lager then is being displayed

these are both exactly the same image except one has been resized in the page mark-up

You can do optimise and resize your images online with www.webresizer.com

Upgrade CSS style sheets to the latest standards

This is a bit misleading as its not upgrading your CSS as such, it’s just re-writing it into a shorthand version. We use CSS tidy there was a hosted version at http://csstidy.sourceforge.net/ but it’s no longer there, we have our own copy hosted on our servers http://webmojo.co.uk/csstool/

Optimize Java scripts

What this simply means is place all your Java scripts into one external file

Optimizing Multimedia Content

Audio: First ask yourself whether your site really needs sounds or music! Having a midi file playing in the background is an annoyance (my opinion); visitors come to your page because of its contents and not to listen to music. However, if it’s imperative to include background sounds or music try to use a midi file or a small .wav file that loops seamlessly.

Video: Since video files can be quite large, it’s best to provide a link to the file mentioning the file size and leave the choice of viewing it to the visitor rather than forcing it to load in the page.

Flash: Flash is a vector based program. To keep Flash files at a minimal size try to use fewer fonts, reuse symbols, compress the included sounds, convert bitmaps to vector graphics etc. To judiciously decide whether Flash intros are required for your site.

When you are fairly new to the world of web design, it can actually be quite tricky to choose which fonts to use. But once you understand what “web safe fonts” really are, everything suddenly becomes crystal clear. Web safe fonts are basically the most popular fonts used by web designers to make the content of their websites appealing to visitors. They are also the most commonly available fonts on computers around the world.

If you download a really cool but rare font from your favorite free website and decide to use it for all your main headings for example, you should be aware that unfortunately not everybody will be able to view your masterpiece the way you created it.

In others words, if people who visit your website do not have the fonts you used to design it on their computers, they will not be able to see those particular fonts on their screens. Instead, their browsers will replace them with some other fonts that are already installed on their computers.

That’s why it is highly recommended that you stick to the most popular fonts so that your website can be viewed exactly the way it is by almost everybody.

There are many web safe fonts that you can use to create your websites, all it takes is a little creativity to make them look more attractive and use them to your advantage. There are basically two types of fonts you need to know about:

* Serif fonts
* Sans Serif fonts (Sans is French for without)

Serif Fonts are fonts that have fine cross lines at the end of the letters and Sans Serif Fonts are fonts that do not have anything at the end of the letters. The most common Serif Font is Times New Roman which is also coincidentally the default font for most windows-based browsers.

There are also Monospaced Fonts which are basically fonts that have the same amount of space between each letter. Here’s a list of the 23 most commonly used fonts – I personally use Georgia, Times New Roman, Tahoma for the texts and Impact for Headings which I think look really good on a web page:

Most Common Serif Fonts:

Bookman Old Style

Cambria

Constantia

Garamond

Georgia

Palatino Linotype

Times New Roman

Most Common Sans Serif Fonts:

Arial

Arial Black

Calibri

Candara

Century Gothic

Corbel

Helvetica

Impact

MS Sans Serif

Tahoma

Trebuchet MS

Verdana

Most Common Monospaced Fonts:

Consolas

Courier New

Courier

Final thoughts:

To make you life easier, I recommend that you stick to the most common fonts listed above for the body text of your websites. This will ensure that everyone visiting your website can see it exactly the way you want it to be seen.

However you can use whatever font you choose for your logos, navigation and other website design elements just as long as you use them as part of an image. For example on a clickable logo or banner designed on Photoshop or PaintNet which you then insert on your webpage. Well I really hope this has helped you understand what web safe fonts are and how to use them.
