Recently I’ve changed from Ubuntu running Gnome 3 front end to Ubuntu running the KDE front end or Kubuntu. the main reason for this change are problems with the Ati graphics drivers .

One of the things that I love is Dropbox . Dropbox is a cloud based backup service that is accessible on almost all connected devices. It works great on Ubuntu with a Gnome front end as it is tightly tied into the Nautilus file manager. When you install the deb package on KDE it says it installs fine but nothing happens. I have found a very simple way to get this working.

Open your file manager (dolphin)
Click on Root
Navigate to usr\share\applications
Find the file dropbox.desktop
Click , this will let you download the dropbox daemon and set up the program

Job done simple!

Being a small business I sometimes have to pick up the phone and do some prospecting for new clients myself . Even though in the past I have had experience in a telesales environment doing it for yourself is a whole different kettle of fish then doing it for someone else.

A telemarketing script is a great way to did your toe in the water in telesales by giving yourself a structure to follow and not end up with the awful situation of silence with you not knowing what to say

Telemarketing is, for many company’s the first contact they make with new clients. Done correctly, it can be the fastest way to build a business from a standing start. Done incorrectly it can alienate many potential clients and create a not so welcome reputation.

Telemarketing scripts are best used as a framework, a way to structure a call to provide the route to your goal by simply following a few simple steps

Know your Goal

A goal, is the end result you wish to achieve. Do you want to sell a product or service directly over the phone or is it to set up an appointment. Like a map, knowing the final location allows you to plot the best path.

Talking to the correct person !important

When you have made contact you need to be talking to the the right person if you are not, you are wasting selling time. The correct person is known as the decision maker, the decision maker is the person that can authorise you to get paid.

Names

Find the persons name and title depending on the context of the call you can either address them as Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms. or by there first name. As a rule of thumb try to gather how they would be addressed in the organisation

Step One

Assuming you are speaking to the correct person you should introduce your self and your company this can simply be,

“Hello Jenny, My name is Bob I’m calling from ABC Marketing”

Step Two

The reason for your call. Why are you interrupting these busy people. This is the hook part of the call, It needs to be punchy and concise; the reason why they should listen to the rest of what you have to say.

“Jenny ABC Marketing help businesses like yours to get more clients.”

There may be times when you have been given the contact name by an existing client so you can work this into the conversation.

“Jenny ABC Marketing help businesses like yours to get more clients. Bob Proctor gave us your name as we have done such a great job for his marketing he thought we could do the same for you”

Step Three

Open Questioning
Open questioning is about asking questions that can not be answered with one word answers such as yes or no.

Open question examples

“Jenny how do you currently market your company”

“Jenny how successful has your marketing plan been in the past”

Questions that can be answered with a single word are known as closed questions. In the opening stages of a call they can kill it dead by giving you no-where to go.
Using open questions you will get your prospect chatting about the company giving you a more rounded overview prompting you to ask better questions to establish a need for your product or service.

Active listening
To be interesting you have to be interested, show you’re listening to what your prospect is saying be repeating back key terms and delving further in.

Building Rapport

Building rapport is about being liked and liking who your talking to. People buy people, building a business relationship is as much about personalities as it is about the product or service. I find the best ways to build rapport is to be interested in the other person not just pretending but to have a genuine interest in people and what they are doing. I work with someone who has an amazing knack of building rapport with someone very quickly by doing this she increases her sales without even trying.

When you write your telemarketing script use these pointers to build an effective framework to hang your personality on and make it yours.

do professional webdesigners use pre-designed web templates to design their sites? ?

Im a webdesigner, who is just starting out, my designs are not as professional as most site out there,should i think less of myself if i were to use a template in my design?

Definitely not, if you are a “professional”.
The reason are simple:
- a template is instantaneously recognisable as the product of an amateur.
- many templates actually do not work properly.
- 99% of templates do not cater for full AJAX sites.
- many templates have been designed for one resolution only, or for one browser only.
- many templates rely on other servers for images or scripts: a very, very bad idea, as the site relies on an external source on which you have no control…

However:
Withing the myriads of templates available, some of them are quite pretty, so using them to start with may be a small shortcut, on the graphic side, but editing them to adapt them to your needs, usually, takes longer to do than starting from scratch!
Personally, I prefer to work with Graphic Designers. They “design” the pages, as it should “look”, and supply me with a full layers photoshop file. I cut the images in pieces and make the site work! I then have the “look” AND the “functionality”.

Some advice on forming a web-design company in the UK ?

I’m not from the UK, and I would like to form a web-design company based in the UK. I would really appreciate some advice about the papers needed from someone who has done this or something similar. Will I need to have a physical headquarters, or can I use the address from my home country (in the EU) ? How much (approximately) will all the paperwork and approvals cost ? Any othe advice is welcome.

What is a better business name for a Web Design Company?

Currently I play in the Automotive Paint Sector and own a company called Brushless Colors. I am in the process of selling off the company, not the name, and am merging over into the Web Design sector for a career.

Currently I have Blue Ice Studio as a business name but just don’t seem like I get much enthusiasm over the name when I say it to others.

The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name’s originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route…

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a “name party” & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I’m not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You’ll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for “free domain name search” and “national yellowpages” and the appropriate links will pop up.

You see, Adsense is a numbers game…

The main two tools creators use are Dreamweaver and Photoshop. There are various versions, suites, etc, but even old versions of these do an excellent job and are much less expensive the the current version. CS3 is excellent and has all the bells and whistles you will ever need. It makes uploading to the server a snap and even working directly on the server version if you want to. (Why I don’t know).

Fireworks will do some things in graphics easier than Photoshop, and you can usually pick up a good used copy for $10 at a flea market or garage sale if you watch for it. However it is a good backup to Photoshop, and will do some things faster and easier, but the full program is not a good replacement for Photoshop. Its a great extra tool.

You asked what is easiest. More and more designers are moving to opensource (free) content management systems (CMS) for their designs. Joomla is probably the most popular but everyone has their favorites. The nice thing about a CMS is that they are totally online and have a wide range of templates available so that the scheme of the entire website can be changed in only a couple of clicks, and changed back as easily. (You can still add your own flair to the design). They have options built in for adding contact pages, mass email lists, forums, shopping carts, rss feeds, and hundreds of other mods very simply with a only a few mouse clicks.

With Joomla, each page can be created as easily as with a word processor and images uploaded easily. One checkbox decides if it the “article” appears on the main page, or somewhere else. Menus can be created just as fast, and menu buttons moved when needed without the need to re-do links or create new buttons.

Each page has wysiwyg editing, but you can also add html that you create in Dreamweaver or elseware and just drop it in and save the page.

What is the best web-design software out there?

It has unlimited pages for the paid version, but there is a free version with 50 pages. That should be enough to make you dangerous.
